We recognise that this is a very difficult and worrying time for doctors. Our professional standards provide a framework for ethical decision making in a wide range of situations. They should be followed as far as practical in the circumstances. We're regularly updating our advice for doctors as the situation develops.
Delegation and referral (summary)
This guidance looks at the similarities and differences between delegating patient care and referring their care.
It tells you what you need to check before you do it, such as checking your colleague is qualified enough, and who’ll be responsible for overall care.
It also looks at information sharing including what you need to say to your patient about transferring their care, and getting their consent to pass information to your colleague.
This guidance came into effect 22 April 2013.
