We recognise that this is a very difficult and worrying time for doctors. Our professional standards provide a framework for ethical decision making in a wide range of situations. They should be followed as far as practical in the circumstances. We're regularly updating our advice for doctors as the situation develops.
Acting as a witness in legal proceedings
You may be asked to give evidence in court, either as a professional witness, or an expert witness. This guidance explains the difference and the duties that come with each role.
If acting as a professional witness this guidance helps you understand the courts’ expectations about factual evidence and opinion.
If acting as an expert witness there is advice about acting within the limits of your knowledge and competence.
This guidance came into effect 22 April 2013.
