Survey of specialty and associate specialist (SAS) and locally employed (LE) doctors

Specialty, associate specialist (SAS) and locally employed (LE) doctors make a hugely valuable contribution to the UK health services, but we understand less about the crucial roles they carry out compared to other parts of the medical workforce.

Our focus groups and discussions with these doctors and their representatives revealed that there are many benefits of being a SAS or LE doctor. But, some also raised concerns about professional development, support in the workplace and bullying and harassment.

To help widen our understanding of SAS and LE doctors experiences, we launched a survey dedicated to gathering their views. We encouraged doctors from across all four countries of the UK to take part and share their workplace and training experiences.

The survey is now closed. We'll use the findings to pinpoint the issues impacting SAS and LE doctors so that we can work with others to make improvements.

What we asked

Prior to developing this survey, we spoke to SAS and LE doctors and the key organisations that work with them. We used their feedback to develop a comprehensive question set that reflected their views.

Question themes included:

  • Career development and access to training
  • Awareness and implementation of the SAS charters
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Team working and support in the workplace
  • Bullying and undermining
  • Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)/Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration (CEGPR)
  • Burnout

How we will use your answers

The findings will help us identify key trends and pinpoint the specific needs of this group of doctors.

Later this year we’ll publish the aggregated results and report on key findings across the UK. We’ll use this information to work with healthcare organisations to pinpoint how we can collectively support SAS and LE doctors, now and in the future.
