Setting the standards for doctors

To work in the UK, doctors must follow specific standards. We set these standards in consultation with patients, doctors, employers and educators.

Our standards set out the professional values, knowledge, skills and behaviours required of doctors working in the UK.

The standards are described in Good medical practice, which covers the fundamental aspects of a doctor's role. This includes working in partnership with patients and treating them with respect. Or making sure children's rights are respected and that good care is provided to people who are reaching the end of their lives.

We also help doctors by giving detailed practical guidance on ethical principles that they will use every day. And we develop case scenarios and tools that help doctors apply the principles in their practice.
