GMCSI case study – Armed Forces College of Medicine

GMCSI is delighted to have completed its first medical school assessment project, working closely with the Armed Forces College of Medicine (AFCM) based in Cairo, Egypt.

Our relationship with AFCM began in 2018 when we had an initial discussion about their requirements for us to complete a medical school assessment. We agreed to the project in May 2020.

We conducted the assessment of AFCM in a similar way to how medical schools are assessed in the United Kingdom. Once we agreed on the project scope, AFCM submitted their documentation for review by our subject matter experts and associates. We reviewed the documents using the five key themes outlined in Promoting excellence:

  • Learning environment and culture
  • Educational governance and leadership
  • Support for learners
  • Support for educators
  • Development and implementation of curricula and assessments.

The visit team travelled to Egypt to meet with key AFCM stakeholders, including the Dean Major General Shokry and the Director of Education, Professor Hamed, Faculty and Students. We were impressed by the high standards of medical education used by AFCM.

Robin Benstead, Principal Education Quality Assurance Programme Manager, the lead subject matter expert said: ‘This is the first project of its kind and we were impressed with how AFCM engaged with the assessment, in the lead up to and during the visit, and with the quality of teaching we found’.

The project team confirmed that AFCM is delivering a high standard of medical education at their medical school. This was confirmed by the presentation of a certificate by Helen Featherstone, General Manager of GMCSI, to the Dean Major General Shokry at an elaborate ceremony, as recognition for their delivery of good quality of medical education equal to the standards used to assess medical schools within the United Kingdom.

GMCSI would like to congratulate AFCM on this achievement and for being the first medical school internationally to be awarded this certificate.
