Why did we commission the research?
We want to make sure that doctors have the support they need at work; that they’re treated fairly; and that their interactions with us are appropriate and proportionate.
But we know that across the UK, employers and healthcare providers are more likely to refer certain groups of doctors to formal local disciplinary processes. They’re also more likely to refer them to our fitness to practice processes.
To help us take steps to address this disparity and improve fairness across the system, we asked Dr Doyin Atewologun and Roger Kline to explore the pattern of referrals we receive.
We also asked them to deliver practical recommendations to help us, and our partners across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, to tackle this issue.
