Research update

The GMC is committed to ensuring we are fair to all doctors and we strive to be evidence based in our approach.

Alongside reforms to our fitness to practise procedures, we are undertaking a three year research programme to help us understand this better. We will start this summer by repeating an independent study we first undertook in 2007 to check that our decision making remains consistent with our published guidance. We will follow this study with an examination of the guidance itself and of the way we frame our allegations to check for unintended bias.

Also, this year we are undertaking a survey to better understand doctors’ experiences of our fitness to practise procedures. We want to know if there are any particular aspects of our procedures that doctors find difficult. Our findings will inform our work to improve our procedures. The survey is being carried out by an independent research organisation and individual responses are confidential and will not be shared with us.
