Black and Minority Ethnic Doctors Forum

The BME Doctors Forum provides a way for the forum’s member organisations to raise issues of interest to the GMC. It helps to ensure that the GMC’s regulatory activities and policies consider the views of, and impact on, BME doctors and international medical graduates (IMGs) practising in the UK.

The Forum is also a platform for the GMC to share its thinking on emerging programmes of work and key challenges with organisations and individuals representing the interests of BME doctors and IMGs. It is chaired by former GMC Council member, Professor Iqbal Singh OBE.

The Forum contributes to the GMC’s activities in the following ways:

  • Provides insights about issues affecting BME doctors that relate to GMC activities, for example, the profile of doctors involved in fitness to practise activities.
  • Raises issues with the GMC on behalf of BME and IMG doctors.
  • Keeps their members and networks informed about the issues discussed by the Forum.
  • Acts as a sounding board to inform GMC policy developments and proposals at an early stage.

The following organisations are represented on the Forum:

  • Association of Pakistani Physicians and Surgeons (UK)
  • British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO)
  • British International Doctors Association (BIDA)
  • British Medical Association (BMA)
  • British Sikh Doctors Organisation (BSDO)
  • Egyptian Medical Society
  • Indian Medical Association
  • Medical Association of Nigerians across Great Britain (MANSAG)
  • Progressive Muslims Forum (PMF)
