GMC workshopsWednesday 30 May 2007The General Medical Council is developing new guidance for doctors on working with patients to make good decisions about care and treatment. As part of the consultation process, we are holding a series of workshops across the UK throughout May and June 2007 in conjunction with the Alzheimer's Society. At each event, an audience of patients, carers and doctors will be invited to discuss and comment on (or participate in) an acted scenario involving a patient whose capacity to make decisions for themselves is affected by early-stage dementia. The focus will be on patients' wishes and concerns about decision making for current and future treatment, and how these can be identified and met. The aim of the workshops is to provide an opportunity for doctors, patients and carers to discuss their views and concerns about these issues together. The discussions at these workshops will inform the content of the guidance, which we plan to publish in early 2008. Cosulting on GMC Children's Guidance in Wales15 January 2007The GMC has launched a UK wide consultation on new draft guidance for doctors, which deals exclusively with issues relating to children and young people. The consultation is open until 23rd February to 2 March 2007. This is a new piece of guidance, and also a new approach for the GMC, in that it addresses a group of patients rather than a discrete issue. The 2006 edition of our core guidance, Good Medical Practice, contains new duties on doctors to safeguard and protect the health and well-being of children and young people. This new draft guidance expands upon those duties. It is for all doctors and not just those who routinely see children and young people as patients. It is also intended to be of use to children, young people and those with an interest in their care. This new draft guidance is based on principles identified through discussion with all four children's commissioner, key stakeholders and children and young people themselves. It is the product of a working group of lay and medical members of the GMC and representatives from social care, nursing, teaching and the relevant medical specialties from across the UK. As part of our consultation process we are holding a meeting of stakeholders and interested parties in Cardiff on February 15 th , at the National Assembly for Wales between 9.30 and 1.30 . We are delighted that the Minister for Children, Jane Hutt, will address the meeting. If you would like further details please contact GMC Wales on 02920 50 40 60 or e-mail dhughes@gmc-uk.org. |
