Valuing diversity - an introduction
Our Valuing Diversity Resource Guides provide information and advice on Equal Opportunities and Diversity in the provision of services and in employment. They have been prepared by Ziggi Alexander, a consultant in diversity and equality matters, for the General Medical Council.
The documents are intended to highlight best practice and to provide information about the legal position. They also provide some practical tips which doctors may find useful on a day-to-day basis.
The documents do not provide a comprehensive summary of the law nor detailed guidance on how to comply with the law. But we hope that they provide information which is useful to doctors.
In some cases (for instance the provision of interpreters, or the facilities available in waiting rooms) the issues may be outside a doctor’s control. Nevertheless, we have included them as they will be helpful to some doctors who do have control over such issues.
Links to other websites
The links to ‘expert’ web sites have been sourced from a number of countries, but the overwhelming majority are UK-based, with a minority relating solely to a single UK country.
Advice should be adapted to suit local circumstances where applicable, for example, to take account of different organisational structures and terminology in particular areas.
Some web sites are not directly health related or written for a medical audience. However, they may provide either useful background information for doctors or hold health information tools for patients.
Over time, the internet resource information will be revised. If you find any useful resources not listed here, or you belong to an organisation that would like to be referenced, please let us know and we will add relevant entries in due course.
We welcome feedback on this resource and any suggestions for issues which could be included in future revisions.
