Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

How can we support your CPD?

We are reviewing our role in continuing professional development (CPD) and want to know how we can help you plan, carry out and evaluate CPD that is relevant to your practice.

In the past the GMC has not taken an active role in CPD. This will change with revalidation, which will require every doctor to show how they are maintaining and improving their knowledge and skills.

As the regulator, we need to make sure that every doctor has access to the development opportunities  they need. This is particularly important at a time when healthcare services are under increasing pressure to reduce costs.

‘We are committed to ensuring that every doctor – whether they are a member of a Royal College or not – can access appropriate, quality assured CPD,’ said Professor Sir Peter Rubin, the Chair of the GMC.

‘At the same time, development needs are specific to each doctor – so while it is important that there is appropriate access to CPD, a one size fits all approach will not work.’

This is an important area and we need input from frontline doctors to get our approach right.

We have set up a short online survey – just nine questions – about how you are using CPD and what you think our role ought to be in supporting it. We want to hear from as many doctors as possible about this.

You can take part in the survey here.

Thank you for your time.
