News: CHRE praises GMC procedures
29 March 2010
The GMC’s fitness to practise procedures have been praised for being effective and dealing with complaints in a timely manner.
The audit, the first of its kind conducted by the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE), looked at the handling of complaints about healthcare professionals by all nine of the regulators.
Patient and public safety, and maintaining public confidence in doctors, were found to be the highest priorities for the GMC’s operations. A number of the GMC’s procedures were highlighted as examples of good practice, including the IT and case management system and arrangements for liaison with employers.
GMC Chief Executive Niall Dickson, commenting on the audit, said: “The GMC’s priority is to ensure patient safety when dealing with those doctors who are not safe to practise medicine. The vast majority of doctors in the UK are good doctors but everyone needs to have confidence that we are responding quickly and effectively when it comes to the small number who could pose a risk to patients. The audit by the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence shows that the profession and the public can have confidence in the way we manage complaints about doctors”
