Getting ready for merger of PMETB with GMC in 2010

Work has been progressing to ensure systems are in place for when PMETB’s functions are transferred to the GMC in 2010 when, for the first time, the regulation of both undergraduate and postgraduate education and training will be under one roof.

The way in which the GMC carries out its functions is set out in rules and regulations, providing a legal framework covering the rights and responsibilities of the doctors we regulate and of the GMC.

In October we launched a public consultation on proposed amendments to our rules and regulations to ensure that they allow for a smooth transfer of the PMETB functions, to avoid disruption to current arrangements and to preserve existing rights and responsibilities.

One of the reasons for the merger is to bring greater coherence and continuity across the whole of medical regulation. We have therefore also tried to build flexibility into the rules and regulations so that we have scope to make improvements in the future.

This consultation is your chance to say whether we have got the balance right. You can respond to the consultation online.   Alternatively, you can obtain a copy of the consultation documents from GMC-PMETBconsultation@gmc-uk.org
