News: Students see the future

27 November 2009

Doctors of the future say where they think the profession is heading.

Medical students have been asked to gaze into their crystal balls to share their views on the future of the medical profession. The latest in a series of student roadshows, The 21st Century Doctor, Your Choices Your Future, held in Manchester, Birmingham, Exeter and Southampton saw students debating leadership, professionalism, healthcare systems, education and assessment.

The events, held by the GMC and partners the King’s Fund, the Royal College of Physicians London, the University of Liverpool, the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, and the Student BMJ, provide an opportunity for students to ask questions of their future regulatory body.

The students have been focusing on: what the role of the doctor in the future might be; whether medical students should be expected to behave differently from other students in general; and what role should medical students and doctors have in developing and improving health services.
