28 September 2009

The number of new women doctors joining the medical register is soaring.

The summer peak in registration has seen an increase in the number of women applying for provisional registration, with 61% of applications being made by women – up from 60% on last year.

This year, the GMC has received applications for provisional registration from 7,007 newly qualified medical students, which is a two per cent increase on last year. The number of applications to move from provisional to full registration has also seen an increase with 6,941 applications made compared to 6,055 last year.

European Economic Area and international medical graduates also impact upon the busy summer peak and this year 1,160 new doctors applied to gain registration for the first time.
