News: Difficult ethical dilemmas

A reader comments on shared values between UK and non-UK qualified doctors

With reference to the article on how to deal with ethical dilemmas (March/April), I myself, as a non-UK qualified doctor, arrived in the UK five years ago and feel no more different than UK qualified doctors with regard to this issue. Since my arrival, I have learned several points that I feel are shared by all doctors, whether UK graduates or otherwise.

Firstly, that health and safety practice is undertaken very strictly. Secondly, that the patient should be at the heart of the decision-making process. Each patient should be treated individually, respecting the wishes and needs of, primarily, the patient, but also those of the family, as the team sees fit.

Thirdly, there is plenty of help available from senior colleagues and the hospital legal advice team in difficult ethical dilemmas.
