News: Patient’s return to work: the value of communication

25 March 2009

A doctor comments on communication strategies for a patient's successful rehabilitation back into work.

With reference to the article on the Practitioner Health Programme, GMCtoday January/February 2009, one important treatment and outcome for all patients, including doctors and dentists, is a successful return to work.

An important factor when patients return to work after complex illnesses is good communication between the therapists and the employers. Professionals with complex illnesses may need a careful rehabilitation plan and follow up after they return to work.

Occupational health professionals can add value to this process by advising employers on the practical implications of a professional’s illness whilst maintaining strict medical confidentiality. PHP needs to look at how to improve communication with occupational health services about the professionals they help. This is especially important to help with the professional’s rehabilitation back to work, which is a crucial outcome.
