News: GMC's commitment to evidence-based development.

26 January 2009

A reader's comment on the GMC's commitment to evidence-based development.

In his excellent article in GMCtoday, Professor Hood declares ‘We want to ask what constitutes good practice.’ Further on we are assured ‘The GMC is committed to evidence-based development.’

Has the cart not overtaken the horse by some considerable distance? Like most health service reforms, lip-service is paid to an evidence-base: but appraisal, assessment, revalidation and the licence to practise have all been (or will be) introduced without complete evidence as to their effectiveness.

When new drugs are introduced, we expect evidence in advance. Shouldn't this be the norm in regulation too?
