Features: Tomorrow’s Doctors update

25 May 2009

Read the latest on the GMC’s Tomorrow’s Doctors (2009) consultation.

Responses to the GMC’s consultation on the 2009 edition of Tomorrow’s Doctors have endorsed the need for medical students to gain more practical experience.

Following a highly successful consultation, drawing more than 600 responses from doctors and the public, the GMC is preparing to publish the new standards for undergraduate medical education.

The proposals have been widely welcomed but respondents made various suggestions for improvement. An encouraging 74% of respondents to a detailed questionnaire said the draft requirements would promote high standards in medical education. Only five per cent disagreed.

The consultation included a major consultative conference attended by more than 200 stakeholders. Discussions took place in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. In addition, Skills for Health interviewed 230 NHS staff.

We are carefully considering the responses to the consultation and will publish the new edition later this year.
