News: Promoting equality
Baroness Amos chairs the Forum.
27 July 2009
An update on the GMC's Equality and Diversity Research Forum held in June.
How international medical graduates might be supported in understanding and navigating the ethical framework that underpins healthcare practice in the UK, was one of the issues discussed by the GMC’s Equality and Diversity Research Forum in June.
The Forum, chaired by Baroness Valerie Amos, also looked at some of the differences of regulatory systems across the EU and internationally. Discussions highlighted some potential challenges faced by doctors when entering the UK workplace for the first time.
Researchers from a number of projects made presentations to the Forum, which was well attended by a variety of organisations.
Deputy Chief Executive of the GMC, Paul Philip, told GMCtoday: ‘Our Equality and Diversity Research Forum has made a big difference, enabling us to speak directly with the researchers doing the work.’
The full reports of the projects discussed are published on our research webpage.
Forum for black and minority ethnic doctors
As part of the GMC’s wider commitment to equality and diversity, a seminar was also held in May for doctors from black and minority ethnic groups. Representatives from, among others, the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin and the British International Doctors’ Association attended.
As a next step, the GMC will develop a plan to enhance engagement with doctors from ethnic minority backgrounds through local networks.
