News: Entry to specialist register

26 January 2009

Were you first appointed to a substantive, honorary or fixed-term consultant post in the NHS or armed forces before 1 January 1997?

Have you tried to get specialist registration through the PMETB via the ‘article 14’ route and were you first appointed to a substantive, honorary or fixed-term consultant post in the NHS or armed forces before 1 January 1997?

In March 2009, the GMC will be reintroducing the ‘late entry’ route to the specialist register for these doctors. The route was removed in September 2005 as a result of a change in the legislation but following pressure from the GMC and others it has now been reinstated.

Assistant Director of Registration, Anthony Egerton said: ‘The reintroduction of this route is a welcome development, although we are now required to publish a “scheme” that will set the criteria to be considered when determining applications from this cohort of specialists.’

If you are a pre-1997 consultant who is not on the specialist register but have been in medical practice within the last five years – not necessarily at consultant level – you could be eligible under the scheme.

You can email us at pre1997scheme@gmc-uk.org to register your interest in obtaining specialist registration in this way. We will then contact you about the application process once the details of the scheme have been finalised.
