News: GMC strengthens links with NHS Litigation Authority

GMC to work more closely with the NHS Litigation Authority which handles negligence claims made against NHS trusts in England.

In order to handle a negligence claim, the NHSLA needs to contact doctors to invite them to act as witnesses, often many years after an alleged incident has occurred. The GMC has worked in partnership with the NHSLA for a number of years and has traditionally provided doctors’ contact details on request to their current or former employers. They in turn pass the details to the NHSLA.

In order to improve the flow of information, from 1 February 2009 we will provide a doctor’s contact information directly to a designated point of contact within the NHSLA, subject to appropriate safeguards, if they need to call the doctor as a witness. This will ensure that potential witnesses are contacted in a timely fashion.
