Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Could you help to lead the GMC?

Applications are now open for new members of the GMC’s Council.

Our Council sets the GMC’s strategy, holds our executive team to account and takes high-level policy decisions. The current Council has overseen a major programme of work to prepare for revalidation, to modernise our fitness to practise procedures and to improve our local presence. Members need a range of skills, and include people with medical and non-medical backgrounds.

Timescales for appointments

Applications for the role of Chair closed on 30 July, and the appointment will be made in September. Applications for members of the Council are open until 31 August, and appointments will be made in November.

Both the Chair and Council members will be appointed for up to four years and their appointment is being overseen by the Privy Council.

The new Council will begin work in January 2013.

A smaller Council

Our current Council includes 24 members. We are reducing its size to 12 members. The new, smaller Council is one of a number of changes to healthcare regulation recommended in the Government’s command paper, Enabling excellence: autonomy and accountability for healthcare workers, social workers and social care workers. Most of the recommendations seek to give regulators greater independence and to improve efficiency.
