Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Know your profession? Five facts from the report

For the first time in its history the GMC has published a contemporary analysis of the profession.

The state of medical education and practice in the UK 2011, uses GMC data and that of other organisations  to provide an overview of medicine in the UK and the challenges it faces. Five key facts from the report are below.

  1. 1. Within the next decade, there will be more female than male doctors in the UK.
  2. 2. More than a third of registered doctors qualified overseas.
  3. 3. There is notable variation in trainees’ experiences of supervision and there are ongoing tensions between service delivery and protected time for education and training.
  4. 4. While there is a wide distribution of ages, most commonly, doctors are in their early 30s.
  5. 5. The highest proportion of complaints to the GMC are about male doctors, older doctors and GPs.
