There were more than one million visits to the General Medical Council’s website between July and September; a record for a three-month period. Interest in revalidation helped to attract an extra 200,000 visits compared to the same period in 2009.
We are delighted that more doctors than ever are visiting our website, not only to check out the latest information on revalidation, but also to access guidance on education and professional standards, and provide feedback to help us shape our policies.
Niall Dickson, GMC Chief Executive
The GMC has pioneered a number of interactive pages which are designed to support doctors wanting to know more about its standards as well as other areas of its work.
“In the past many doctors had minimal contact with the GMC and to be frank they liked it that way. But today we need to have an ongoing relationship with every doctor and will be with the doctor from the day they walk into medical school to the day they retire.
“For us that means providing reliable and useful information. We are delighted that more doctors than ever are visiting our website, not only to check out the latest information on revalidation, but also to access guidance on education and professional standards, and provide feedback to help us shape our policies for the future.”

The General Medical Council registers and licenses doctors to practise medicine in the UK. Our purpose is summed up in the phrase: Regulating doctors, Ensuring Good Medical Practice.
The law gives us four main functions:
• keeping up-to-date registers of qualified doctors
• fostering good medical practice
• promoting high standards of medical education and training
• dealing firmly and fairly with doctors whose fitness to practise is in doubt
