Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Future of medical education and training to be discussed at GMC UK conference

Press Release

04 Oct 2010

The challenges and choices ahead for medical education will be the subject of a keynote speech by Professor John Collins at the GMC’s first UK conference since the organisation assumed responsibility for regulating all stages of medical training.

This conference will help shape our plans to support world-leading medical education and training for all UK doctors.

Niall Dickson, GMC Chief Executive

The world-renowned surgeon and expert in medical education has recently undertaken a major review of the Foundation Programme in England, the findings of which will be published later this year.

Around 250 medical students, doctors in training, trainers and representatives from medical schools, medical Royal Colleges and NHS organisations are expected to attend the event on Tuesday 12 October.

The GMC is hoping that many more will also take part through its web-streaming facility, which will allow users to join in the debates and put questions to the speakers.

The conference at the Congress Centre, London will help shape the GMC’s education strategy for the next three years. Participants will discuss the challenges for medical education and training and the regulatory changes which would do most to ensure excellence in medical education and training.

Niall Dickson, Chief Executive of the General Medical Council, said: “This conference will help shape our plans to support world-leading medical education and training for all UK doctors.  One of the GMC’s main priorities is to promote high standards of education and training, so that patients now and in the future can have confidence that they will receive safe, high-quality medical care.  We hope as many participants as possible will be able to join in the discussions in person or via web-streaming.”

Other conference speakers include Professor Sir Peter Rubin, Chair of the General Medical Council and Richard Horton, Editor in Chief of The Lancet.

Participants wishing to join this event online should register, after which they will be sent log-in details to access the site and enable them to take part in the conference.

The General Medical Council registers and licenses doctors to practise medicine in the UK. Our purpose is summed up in the phrase: Regulating doctors, Ensuring Good Medical Practice.

The law gives us four main functions:

  • keeping up-to-date registers of qualified doctors
  • fostering good medical practice
  • promoting high standards of medical education and training
  • dealing firmly and fairly with doctors whose fitness to practise is in doubt
