General Medical Council welcomes new lay member to Council

The General Medical Council today welcomes the appointment of a new member to its governing body.

Dr Davison's skills and experience in managing both complex operational and strategic projects will greatly benefit the Council, and we look forward to working with her.

Dr Sue Davison joins as a lay member of the Council, following an open and competitive appointment process overseen by the Appointments Commission.

Dr Sue Davison gained a PhD in organometallic chemistry from the University of Sheffield. She joined BP as a research chemist in 1982, and held a number of senior management roles in technology at the company until her recent retirement, including Safety, Operations and Technology Vice President Petrochemicals Division for BP leading international scientific teams and overseeing large-scale research projects. Dr Davison lives in East Yorkshire.

Dr Davison said:

“Throughout my career I have sought to improve systems and drive up standards. The GMC is a world leader in medical regulation, and I am keen to contribute to its continued success.”

Welcoming Dr Davison on behalf of the Council, Professor Sir Peter Rubin, Chair of the GMC, said:

Dr Davison’s term of office will be from 1 September 2010 to 31 December 2012. Council members receive remuneration of £11,825 per annum.

Dr Davison will attend her first meeting of Council in Belfast on 7 September 2010.

All appointments to Council are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Dr Davison has declared the following political activity in the last five years: canvassing on behalf of the Liberal Democrats. Dr Davison holds no ministerial appointments.
 
The Council is the governing body of the General Medical Council. It comprises 24 members, of whom 12 are lay and 12 medical, all appointed by the Appointments Commission.
