“We welcome Anne Milton’s announcement and view the government’s proposal as a sensible way forward.
“We are keen to contribute to the consultation.
“The GMC is committed to the concept of independent adjudication and to building on the reforms that we have already implemented.
“We have also been working closely with OHPA on a range of further changes, which we would want to take forward to develop a more cost-effective model for adjudication in the future.
“We will continue to work closely with the Department of Health throughout this process.”

The General Medical Council registers and licenses doctors to practise medicine in the UK. Our purpose is summed up in the phrase: Regulating doctors, Ensuring Good Medical Practice.
The law gives us four main functions:
• keeping up-to-date registers of qualified doctors
• fostering good medical practice
• promoting high standards of medical education and training
• dealing firmly and fairly with doctors whose fitness to practise is in doubt
