Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice
11 Feb 2009
The Revalidation Programme Board, chaired by Sir Michael Pitt, met for the first time yesterday to oversee the delivery of medical revalidation across the UK.
The meeting welcomed Board members from across the UK which included representatives from the four administrations, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, the GMC, BMA and patient organisations as well as the NHS and other healthcare providers.
The Board will give strategic leadership of the roll out of revalidation across the UK. Early tasks will be to agree a robust programme of project management and reporting arrangements for revalidation and to ensure an effective communications strategy so that the profession, the public and other key interest groups are able to engage with the work of the Board.
Sir Michael Pitt, Chairman of the Board commented: “The implementation of revalidation in the UK is a shared responsibility and forms a part of a much broader health quality agenda. There must also be a commitment and contribution to the successful delivery of revalidation by all those who have responsibility for local systems of healthcare delivery and for maintaining robust approaches to clinical governance.
“The Board has a common agenda to oversee medical revalidation across all four countries of the UK in a way that is coordinated and consistent.
“It is essential that the approach to implementation commands the support and confidence of all key healthcare stakeholders and this meeting was a significant step in this process.”
