Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

GMC statement in response to the Health Select Committee's 9th report

GMC Statement

14 Sep 2011

Commenting on the 9th report of the Health Select Committee, 'The annual accountability hearing with the Care Quality Commission', the Chief Executive of the General Medical Council Niall Dickson said:

‘The Committee is absolutely right to emphasise the important role that the CQC and the GMC have in supporting doctors to raise concerns about poor standards of care.

'The challenge laid down to us all by the Committee is clear.

'We are committed to work together with systems and other professional regulators to help bring about the culture changed needed so that everyone caring for patients acts on concerns or failures.'

The General Medical Council registers and licenses doctors to practise medicine in the UK. Our purpose is summed up in the phrase: Regulating doctors, Ensuring Good Medical Practice.

The law gives us four main functions:

  • keeping up-to-date registers of qualified doctors
  • fostering good medical practice
  • promoting high standards of medical education and training
  • dealing firmly and fairly with doctors whose fitness to practise is in doubt
