Patients seeking advice or information about assistance to die

Introduction

This guidance explains how the principles in Good Medical Practice apply for doctors when a patient seeks advice or information about assistance to die.

Doctors face difficult challenges in responding sensitively, and compassionately, to a patient who seeks advice or information about hastening their death, while ensuring that their response does not contravene the law by encouraging or assisting the patient to commit suicide.

Doctors must follow all our guidance: serious or persistent failure to do so will put their registration at risk.
