Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice
Read views from Niall Dickson (Chief Executive of the GMC), Dr Anne Slowther (Associate Professor of Clinical Ethics Warwick Medical School), Dr Guy Watkins (Chief Executive at Cambridgeshire Local Medical Committee) and Dr Harry Burns (Chief Medical Officer for Scotland).
Niall Dickson, Chief Executive of the GMC
"I am proud of Good Medical Practice - it has been adopted in more than 20 countries around the world and at the GMC it is at the heart of everything we do. It underpins the outcomes we set for every medical student in the UK. It shapes the postgraduate education we regulate and it will be critical in the appraisal of every doctor as part of revalidation. It is also vital when considering complaints about doctors.
Above all though Good Medical Practice has to be a living document which informs practice and reflects what patients want from their doctor.
So whether you are a patient or a doctor, a medical educator or another professional, this review is your chance to tell us what you think. There will be plenty of ways to engage over the coming months, so please visit this site regularly to see what's new."
Dr Anne Slowther, Associate Professor of Clinical Ethics Warwick Medical School
"Good Medical Practice is the foundation for my teaching of medical ethics in the MBChB curriculum. It helps to crystallise abstract ethical theories and principles within the day to day context of clinical practice, which is rightly the focus of students' interest.
Using practical case examples students learn to understand the ethical complexity of patient care using the principles of Good Medical Practice and related guidance as a reference point for their discussion."
Dr Guy Watkins, Chief Executive at Cambridgeshire Local Medical Committee
"As an LMC secretary, I work closely with GPs in difficult situations every day.
Good Medical Practice enshrines in a sensible yet aspirational way the high level principles by which we must always abide. This helps us work together in developing understanding and insight; using Good Medical Practice as representative of the shared conscience of the profession is a very powerful tool in my work."
Dr Harry Burns, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland
"Doctors in 2011 fulfil a huge variety of roles involving many different skills - from super-specialist surgery to general practice, and from medical management to pharmaceutical medicine.
But despite this diversity we are still a profession held together by professional values that promote quality and safety in patient-centred care and the use of our knowledge and skills to help those who are ill and to promote good health in the community.
Good Medical Practice describes these professional values, and helps us all work for the benefit of patients."
