Visitor teams: Southampton Medical School

As part of the quality assurance process, medical schools are assessed by teams of visitors.

Below are details about the visitors who visited Southampton Medical School during the 2007/8 cycle of visits.

Team Leader: Prof Reg Jordan

Graduate from Newcastle University, BSc (Hons) Class I in Anatomy in 1969, and awarded PhD in 1974 for work on the development of the thymus. Following appointments as Lecturer in anatomy in both Glasgow and Newcastle, and as Visiting Professor of Immunology in the University of Nebraska Medical Centre, USA, promoted to Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine, and served as Head of Department of Immunology from 1988 to 1995.

Following a successful research career in immunology, promoted in 1996 to a Personal Chair in Medical Education, and from 1996 to 1999 served as the Director of the Anatomy and Clinical Skills Centre in the School of Surgical Sciences. From 1988-1998, served as Academic Sub-Dean of the Medical School; appointed as Director of Medical Studies in 1998, and as Deputy Dean of Medicine in 2000. Appointed in 2002 to current position of Dean of Undergraduate Medicine, University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Published widely in the fields of immunology, medical education and the application of ICT to professional learning.

Prof Trudie Roberts

Professor Medical Education and Director Medical Education Unit University of Leeds School of Medicine

Professor Roberts graduated from Manchester with a degree in Medicine and a BSc in Anatomy. She undertook her early medical training in Manchester and her research in immunological responses to lung tumours at the Paterson Laboratories in Manchester and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. In 1995 she was appointed Senior Lecturer in Transplant Immunology at the University of Manchester and Director of the New Heart New Start Transplant Laboratory at the University Hospital of South Manchester. In 2000 she was appointed Professor of Medical Education and Director of the Medical Education Unit at the University of Leeds. She previously chaired the MBChB committee and had responsibility for the undergraduate course at Leeds.

Her main interests and expertise are in the areas of assessment of competence, professionalism, inter-professional education and widening access and participation. She has published papers on inter-professional education, disabilities and assessment and contributed to the QAA document on benchmarking in medicine. She has examined for the PLAB assessment and examines for the RCP PACES exam. In 2003 she was appointed by the Secretary of State to sit on the General Medical Council for Osteopathy as educational advisor and she chairs their Education Committee.

She is a council member of the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) in the UK and sits on the ASME Executive. In 2004 she was elected to the executive committee of the Association of Medical Education in Europe. Following the successful HEFCE bid in 2005 she became the director of the West Yorkshire Consortium - Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CETL) focused on Assessment and Learning in Practice Settings (ALPS) which is a multidisciplinary project involving 5 Higher Education Institutions. In January 2006 she took up the role of Head of the School of Medicine in Leeds.

Mr Trevor Beedham

Trevor Beedham has recently accepted a post of Associate Dean for Eduction at Queen Mary Westfield School of Medicine & Dentistry (St Bartholomew's and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London). He continues as Clinical Director for Women's & Children's Directorate and is a Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medical Education.

Mr Philip Brown

Philip is a freelance consultant in the area of medical education and higher education administration, having spent 20 years working within the University of London, most recently as Academic Registrar at St George’s. During his time at St George’s he was closely involved with curriculum development, co-ordinating the development and implementation of the new 5-year course in 1996, and taking a leading role in developing the plans for the innovative 4-year Graduate Entry Programme in 2000.

Philip’s experience covers most areas of student and course administration and curriculum development. He has a particular interest in admissions policy, working with the Australian Council for Educational Research on the introduction, implementation and evaluation of aptitude testing in UK medical schools. He also carries forward from his days as an Academic Registrar an interest in the area of student health and conduct, and particularly how medical schools have developed their fitness to practise procedures.

Prof Philip Milner

I run a business as a Consultant in Public Health to support public bodies to improve the health of local people. I am also a visiting professor of public health in The School for Health at the University of Bath. I work with PCTs, Government Office South West, and South West Public Health Observatory.

Prior posts were Director of Policy and Partnerships with Avon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire SHA, Professor of Public Health and Director of the Institute of Health at the University of Bath, and Director of Public Health for Wiltshire Health Authority and Rotherham Health Authorities. I have a particular interest in tackling inequalities in health and applying evidence-based practice.

Dr Matt Shale

Matthew Shale graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2003. During his undergraduate studies, he provided student representation on a number of committees within the medical school, and was involved in the redesign of the undergraduate medical course in Sheffield. Following junior medical jobs in Sheffield and London he achieved his MRCP and has recently been awarded an academic national training number in Gastroenterology at Hammersmith Hospital, London.

Following his involvement in medical education whilst a student, Matthew has been a member of the QABME visiting team to Peninsula Medical School since 2003.

Mrs Susan Hobbs

Thirty years experience of healthcare both in the United Kingdom and the United States working as a clinical nurse practitioner, in neurosciences as a nurse teacher, and as healthcare manager. Has worked across primary, secondary and tertiary health care settings, including mental health. Has worked at Board level since 1988 and most recently retired from the position of Chief Nurse (Executive) and Clinical Governance lead for the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust, the third largest NHS Trust in the country.

Presently developing a portfolio career in health care management consultancy with particular interests in quality assurance, risk management and corporate and clinical governance. Sue is also a Non-Executive Director with the NHS Professionals Special Health Authority and an Associate with the Education Committee of the General Medical Council. Also involved as Chair of a charity for brain-injured children and as Trustee of two further charities, one for acquired disabilities (adult) and one for breast cancer.

Mr Chris Hands

Chris Hands graduated from Cambridge, with a BA in English in 2002, and went on to gain his M.St. in English at Oxford in 2004.  He is currently in the third year of the graduate entry program at St George’s, University of London.  Chris has interests in social justice and the impact of volunteering, and a particular interest in refugee issues and refugee health.  He is currently involved with two voluntary organisations, as Chair of Student Action for Refugees at St Georges, and Honorary Director for Morocco for Africatrust Networks – a small NGO which coordinates international volunteering.  Chris also maintains a lively interest in current health policy, and ways in which it can be influenced by healthcare students and junior staff.  He has recently organised a series of seminars at St Georges on changes in the NHS, and is a regular contributor to the News section of the Student BMJ.
