Review of Tomorrow's Doctors

The GMC Education Committee last published Tomorrow’s Doctors, its standards for undergraduate medical education, in 2003. The Committee is now reviewing Tomorrow’s Doctors to consider how this guidance might be changed to incorporate key changes impacting the medical sector and to ensure that the guidance remains fit for purpose.

Review

The review of Tomorrow’s Doctors will build on previous consultation undertaken by the GMC.

It will consider if standards set out in the current edition are still relevant and appropriate and will take account of developments in educational theory, research and professional practice since the guidance was last published in 2003.

The review will run in two phases:

Phase One

The first phase of the review will inform the development of a revised draft of Tomorrow’s Doctors for consultation through engagement with a wide range of stakeholders and information gathering on key issues.

Phase Two

The revised draft of Tomorrow’s Doctors will be published for consideration and feedback during a three-month consultation period. This consultation should commence in late 2008.

The review will lead to a new edition of Tomorrow’s Doctors which will meet the changing context of the medical education environment and ensure undergraduate medical education continues to provide graduates with a strong foundation for future learning and practice.
