Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Seeking approval for out of programme experience

All references to CCT on this page are also relevant to doctors applying for entry onto the Specialist Register or GP Register with a CESR or a CEGPR through the combined programme.

For an out of programme training or research post or an acting-up consultancy post to contribute towards a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) it must be approved by the GMC before the post is started.

We need the following documents to consider approval of out of programme experience:

  1. 1. A form completed by the deanery giving details of the post. The GMC cannot accept applications directly from individual trainees, a Royal College or Faculty.
  2. 2. Written support from the relevant Royal College or Faculty, as detailed in the form. This can be a letter on College/Faculty headed paper or email from a College email address. Local College representatives must act in accordance with the national policy of their College and should seek advice where necessary from their College to ensure consistent standards across the UK.

Requests for GMC approval of out of programme posts, containing the above mentioned documentation in full, should be submitted by the Deanery through GMC Connect.

Approval does not need to be sought if you do not want the post to count towards a CCT.
