Merger of PMETB with the GMC

Background

In February 2008 the Government announced that PMETB would be merged with the GMC, following a recommendation from Sir John Tooke’s inquiry into ‘Modernising Medical Careers’.

The merger aims to build on the strengths of both bodies, while securing gains from the single oversight of all stages of medical education and training.

Timetable

The process of merger requires a change in legislation. The Secretary of State for Health, Alan Johnson, indicated to Parliament that the formal transfer of functions will not take place before 2010.

The two organisations already have a track record of working together successfully and our objective is to achieve a smooth transition, ensuring continuity and maintaining momentum. We have already moved quickly to put in place the appropriate governance and project management arrangements.

Benefits of the merger

We believe there are significant benefits to be delivered through a more seamless and consistent approach to education and training throughout doctors’ careers. A single point of responsibility from admission to medical school, through postgraduate training, to continued practice until retirement will help to ensure consistency of expectations and standards.

Moving forward

If you have any questions about the merger, please contact Simon Higdon.
