Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

About the merger

Creating a single regulator for medical education

Following the merger of the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) with the General Medical Council (GMC) on 1 April 2010, the GMC is now responsible for regulating all stages of medical education in the UK.

Building on the strengths of both bodies, this is the first time a single organisation has been charged with overseeing all stages of a doctor’s career.  The merger creates a simpler and clearer framework for the regulation of medical education and training.
