When was the Foundation Programme introduced?

The Foundation Programme went live in August 2005.

Which years does the Foundation Programme cover?

It covers the next stage after medical students graduate from medical school.

It incorporates what was Pre-Registration House Officer (PRHO) training and the first year of Senior House Officer (SHO) training into a coherent two year programme.

How are admissions handled?

Who sets the standards for Foundation training?

The GMC is responsible for setting the standards and quality assuring the first year up to the grant of full registration.

PMETB (www.pmetb.org.uk) Opens in a new window(external website) is responsible for setting the standards and quality assuring the second year of training.

Both the GMC and PMETB are working together to pilot a joint method for Quality Assurance of the Foundation Programme.
