Education information for UK medical students

Standards and guidance

We set standards and outcomes for medical education in the UK.

See our Undergraduate standards and guidance section for detailed information about the guidance we provide for undergraduate medical education.

For information about the Foundation Programme and specialty including GP training, please see the Postgraduate education and training section.

Professional values in action

Our interactive website Medical students: professional values in action brings to life the principles in our professionalism and fitness to practise guidance for medical students.

You can participate in case studies, 'spot the mistake' in various scenarios, and take a quiz.

Quality assurance

We test whether schools meet the requirements set out in our standards and guidance through quality assurance activity. We arrange for experts to visit the schools, inspect what goes on and discuss local arrangements.

We publish what we find out on our website. The medical schools also provide information to us in annual reports, and we receive information from other areas of GMC work and other regulators.

We also respond to concerns raised by students, medical schools, or patients, and arrange additional checks of schools if there is evidence that requires investigation.
