Histopathology Subspecialties

The GMC-approved subspecialty curricula of forensic pathology, neuropathology and paediatric pathology are available in the 2007/08 histopathology curriculum (pdf).

Applications have been made to the UK Departments of Health for specialty status to be granted to these subspecialties.  This may lead to the creation of three new CCT specialties in forensic histopathology, diagnostic neuropathology and paediatric and perinatal pathology.  The existing subspecialties will then be decommissioned once all existing trainees have either exited training or transferred to the new specialties (subject to a mapping exercise being undertaken by the Royal College).

In order to facilitate the transition to the three possible new specialties, the GMC have agreed that the existing subspecialty curricula will remain approved until 31 December 2012.  This means that histopathology trainees can continue to be appointed to these approved subspecialties until the end of 2012 and will continue with their training thereafter.   Trainees will be able to access the new specialties once the curricula and assessment systems have been approved by the GMC.

It is anticipated that the new specialty curricula will be approved by the GMC and implemented in early 2013 in order to avoid a hiatus in recruitment.  Transitional arrangements will also be published alongside the new curricula.
