Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry has announced it is proposing to split into two separate medical schools: Plymouth and Exeter.

If you are currently studying at Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry your degree from this combination of universities will remain valid in the future. We expect the universities to communicate with students and staff about the changes.

We were notified of the universities’ decision to split. The GMC’s role is to quality assure both programmes within our normal processes to ensure our standards are maintained while these changes take place.

The universities must apply to the GMC to be recognised independently and demonstrate that their programmes will meet the standards in Tomorrow’s Doctors. You can find the list of the bodies that can award primary medical qualifications (PMQ) on our website at bodies awarding UK medical degrees.

If each medical school is compliant with our standards at each stage of the quality assurance process we will add the universities separately to our list of awarding bodies in time for graduation of the first cohort of students from each medical school. In the future, students would receive a PMQ from either Exeter or Plymouth.
