Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Consultation on routes to the GP and specialist registers

Web News

15 Mar 2012

The GMC is consulting on proposed changes to the way doctors are assessed for GP or specialist registration through the equivalence route.

Doctors who have not gone through a GMC approved specialist or GP training programme may have had equivalent training and experience, and can be assessed for GP or specialist registration through equivalence or CESR/CEGPR routes.

Following the review of the regulation of medical education and training led by Lord Naren Patel in 2010, the GMC set up a working group to review the current arrangements for equivalence routes to the registers, and the group has now produced its final report.

This consultation is seeking feedback on the report's recommendations and invites comment on questions arising from them.

The consultation runs until 15 June 2012.
