General Medical Council
Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice
25 Oct 2011
The GMC has reviewed its position on the registration of medical students and decided against student registration.
The GMC considered its position on medical student registration at its Council meeting on 27 September 2011 and decided that it will not introduce either mandatory or voluntary registration of medical students.
Instead we will continue to work to strengthen engagement with medical students, and will bring forward the point at which medical students engage formally with the GMC.
For students beginning their final year in 2013, GMC reference numbers will be issued at the beginning, rather than the end, of the year.
GMC reference numbers will not mean students are registered, but will make provisional registration more straightforward, and should enable easier access to certain NHS resources.
