Continuing Professional Development

Doctors have a responsibility to keep up to date. This will be one of the criteria for National Health Service appraisals and revalidation with the General Medical Council (GMC).

Setting standards for continuing professional development

The GMC has a statutory role to promote high standards and co-ordinate all aspects of medical education. This includes continuing professional development.

We publish Guidance on Continuing Professional Development, which sets out the principles on which continuing professional development should be based, and the roles of the relevant organisations involved in its delivery and quality assurance.

Accreditation

Royal colleges and other organisations are involved in continuing professional development. Our links section lists many of the organisations and on-line resources for doctors in this area.
