Proposed models
This page sets out our proposed model for introducing regulated credentials
We will be consulting on the process for how organisations can establish a GMC-approved credential and the process for how doctors obtain a credential which is then recorded on the register.
These two processes are set out below.
The doctor's journey to get a credential
The graphic below shows our proposed process for how doctors will be recognised on the medical register with a credential.
Doctors who want to get a credential will contact the body responsible for that credential (the credentialing body) to find out what they need to do.

How organisations get a credential approved by the GMC
The graphic below shows our proposed process to approve and regularly check credentials developed by organisations.
Not every area of medical practice will be suitable for GMC-approved credentials; a regulated credential should only be introduced where:
- patient protection cannot be met in other ways;
- a demonstrable service need exists,
- its development is practicable and feasible, and
- organisations that are authorities in the field clearly support it.
