Credentialing Pilot Study

This page provides information on the credentialing pilot study which took place in 2010

In 2010, the GMC supported three pilot studies looking at the feasibility of credentialing in areas of practice where there was no formal specialty recognition leading to a CCT or sub-specialty, and no regulation of standards.

Pilot areas

The three areas piloted were:

• Breast disease management
• Forensic and legal medicine
• Musculoskeletal medicine.

The pilots were led, respectively, by the Association of Breast Clinicians, the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine and the British Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine.

Conclusions

The pilots followed very different approaches, reflecting the different nature of the specialties involved.

They showed for the specialties involved, the feasibility of developing credentialing using different methodologies based around the evaluation of an individual’s knowledge, skills and performance.
