Surveys background

The National Training Surveys 2010 began in earnest in April 2010 and comprised the fourth National Survey of Trainee Doctors and the third National Survey of Trainers.

For the first time, these national surveys, supported by PMETB (pre-GMC merger), the GMC and COPMeD, ran concurrently. This joined up approach maximised the synergies of this work and also helped to improve the response rate, in particular from trainers, who have a critical role in making sure Foundation Programme training and specialty training including GP trainees, experience the optimum training opportunities.

The new approach to this work also reflects the growing importance and value of surveys to the postgraduate medical training community. Each year the surveys are undertaken, increased opportunities arise for those involved with training to benchmark their results.

The surveys are a pivotal element of the Quality Framework which help those involved with training ensure it is delivered to the national standards required. Results from the surveys inform visits, reporting, and the gathering of evidence. This ensures the quality of training led by deaneries, local education providers and Royal Colleges is of the standard our trainees, the health services and moreover our patients, require.
