Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Changes to GMC certificates

Web News

31 Mar 2011

The GMC has changed three of the certificates connected with entry onto the GP Register and Specialist Register.

From 28 March 2011, the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR), the Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration (CEGPR), and the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) will change to match the format of the GMC’s other registration certificates.

The following changes have been made:

  • The formats of all three certificates have been simplified.
  • The certificate holder’s photograph will no longer appear on the documents to make the application process easier for doctors.
  • Both the specialty and sub-specialty (where applicable) of the doctor are now shown. Multiple specialties will also be shown if applicable.

You can download a GMC guide (pdf) to the new certificate format so you are prepared for when doctors present these new versions to you.

Certificates printed before 28 March 2011 in the previous format remain valid. If you ever have a query about the authenticity of a certificate, please call the GMC on 0161 923 6602 (+44 161 923 6602 from outside the UK).

Medical staffing teams are urged to always check the GMC's online Register to establish whether a doctor is currently licensed to practise and is entered on the Specialist Register or GP Register.
