Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Unsuccessful certification applicants - reviews, reapplications and appeals

This section is to help doctors whose applications for specialist or GP certification have been unsuccessful.

Reviews

You may apply for a review within 90 days of receiving our decision on your application if:

  1. 1. You have additional relevant documentary evidence that addresses the shortfalls set out in our decision that you have not previously submitted

Or

  1. 2. You consider that there has been a procedural defect or other unfairness in the way in which we have processed your application or made our decision.

Reapplications

You may reapply within three years of receiving our decision. If you are applying in a CCT specialty you will be evaluated against the curriculum in place at the time you submit your reapplication. You would usually reapply:

  1. 1. After completing the top up training set out in our decision

Or

  1. 2. If you are able to provide documentary evidence that addresses the shortfalls set out in our decision, that you have not previously submitted.

If you are reapplying in a CCT specialty you will also need to consider any differences between the curriculum in place for your original application and the curriculum in place when you submit your reapplication and submit evidence to cover these differences.

You may only reapply once on a full application. If your reapplication is still unsuccessful and you wish to apply for specialist registration in future, you will need to make a full application. We will then evaluate all of your evidence afresh against the curriculum in place at the time when you apply.

Appeals

You may have a right to appeal our decision on your application, or our failure to provide a decision, under very specific circumstances.
