Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Top up training

This section is to help doctors who have been advised to undertake extra training, assessments or examinations before reapplying for entry onto the Specialist Register with a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or entry onto the GP Register with a Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration (CEGPR).

If we do not grant you entry onto the Specialist Register or GP Register we will set out in our decision letter the reasons for this. Usually, this will be accompanied by an evaluation form.

Under the heading further required training, assessment and examination you will find the recommendations for you.

If you still wish to practise in the UK health services as a fixed term, substantive or honorary consultant or as a GP, then you will need to reapply for entry onto the Specialist Register with a CESR or the GP Register with a CEGPR after you have fulfilled the requirements set out in the recommendations here.

There is no requirement for us, a Royal College, Postgraduate Dean or employer to arrange any additional training or assessments identified in our decision. There is no guarantee of a suitable training placement as this will be subject to the availability of local resources, the degree of support from your employer, suitable opportunities being available through the Postgraduate Deans and the requirements of the health service.

It will be your responsibility to make any arrangements necessary but you may wish to ask your employer or Postgraduate Dean for advice. If you are not in current employment you will need to identify an appropriate place that might agree to offer any training identified.

To find out what you need to do to reapply, or alternatives to reapplying, please see our guidance on reviews, reapplications and appeals.
